MARC scholars present at the 10th Annual SCSE Research Symposium

MARC scholars did a great job presenting their summer research at the 10th Annual Student Center for Science Engagement (SCSE) Research Symposium on Fri, Sep 21, 2018, an event co-sponsored by the MARC Program for the third year in a row. In addition, new MARC scholars were formally inducted during the Awards Ceremony. They are Natalie Hernandez, Amy Sticha, Moraima Noda, and Sergio Escobar. Also, MARC proudly sponsored the visit of the keynote speaker, Dr. Laura Sanchez, Assistant Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at University of Illinois at Chicago.  Dr. Sanchez' research and career path seminar was titled "Visualizing microbial chemistry in situ". In addition to delivering a great talk, Dr. Sanchez also attended students' podium and poster presentations. Below are some pictures from the event.

Juliet Salivo wins Best Presenter at MSU SROP

MARC scholar, Juliet Salivo, successfully completed a Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) at Michigan State University (MSU) this summer. Juliet worked in the laboratory of Dr. Almudena Veiga-Lopez in the Department of Animal Science. Juliet's project investigated the effects of bisphenol S on gap junction intercellular communication. She also won the SROP Best Oral Presentation Award. This is the second year in a row a MARC scholar from NEIU wins the MSU SROP Best Oral Presentation Award with MARC alumni, Ryan Borchert, winning this award in 2017!! We're so proud!

MARC Scholars win awards at ABRCMS

MARC U-STAR scholars Alejandra Villegas and Anthony Smith won research awards at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) that took place Nov. 1-4 in Phoenix, AZ. ABRCMS is one of the largest professional conferences for underrepresented students in biomedical research funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Villegas received her award for Best Poster Presentation in Microbiology for research she did during her summer externship in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University. Anthony was awarded Best Poster Presentation in Biochemistry for presenting research done during his summer externship in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern University. Approximately 300 of the 2,500 students in attendance earned awards. Villegas and Smith were joined at the conference by six classmates whose conference travel expenses were funded by NIH/NSF grants at Northeastern and travel awards from the NEIU Foundation and ABRCMS: Rhys Gunther, Ryan Borchert, Josue Franco, Victoria Puccini, Chido Chikuturudzi and Omar Payan Parra. Alejandra Villegas wins travel award to present at Emory University STEM Research Symposium

MARC scholar, Alejandra Villegas, won travel award to present her research at The STEM Research Symposium organized by Laney Graduate School, Emory University, October 1-3, 2017, in Atlanta, GA. Alejandra's presentation was titled “Effect of Increased N-glycosylation Sites on H5N1 Hemagglutinin Function”, and is a product from research carried out in the laboratory of Dr. Emily Booms.   Alejandra (left) and Dr. Booms (right) are pictured at the symposium. MARC scholars present at NEIU’s 9th Annual SCSE Symposium

MARC scholars presented their research at NEIU's 9th Annual Student Center for Science Engagement (SCSE) Symposium, on Friday, September 22. Two new MARC scholars, Josue Franco and Rhys Gunther, were formally welcomed into the MARC Program at the Symposium. MARC also sponsored the visit of the keynote speaker, Dr. Gentry Patrick, a renowned neuroscientist and diversity advocate at University of California San Diego. Later in the evening, MARC scholars had the opportunity to have dinner with Dr. Patrick at a local restaurant. [more...]


Terry Blaszczak won travel award to present at 48th Annual EMGS Meeting

MARC Scholar, Terry Blaszczak, won a travel award  to present her research poster at the 48th Annual Meeting of Environmental Mutagenesis & Mutagenics Society held in n Raleigh, NC, September 9-13, 2017.  Terry's research was on "Characterizing the Toxic Effect of Acetaminophen Exposure on Drosophila Longevity and Development." Terry was accompanied at the conference by one of her research mentors, Dr. Elyse Bolterstein.
