What is your name?

Mara

What are your favorite classes?

My favorite classes are programming and 1 and 2, since these classes were my introduction to learning how to write code. Another one of my favorite classes is Computational Methods in Biology with Dr. Rachel Trana. This course took my knowledge about CS further. It taught me about one of the powerful ways in which computer science is used in the real world and can blend with other sciences to analyze data.

What is your most satisfying experience as a peer leader?

One of the most satisfying experiences as a peer leader is successfully helping someone understand a concept they may have been struggling with. Witnessing that moment of sudden insight and discovery play across their face is the best!

What kind of advice would you give to aspiring peer leaders?

If you want to be a peer leader it probably means that you like helping others, so don't wait to become a peer leader to start doing this. Submit classwork that you are proud of and take initiative to be supportive. The rest will follow.

Did you have any doubts about being a peer leader and if so what are they?

Yes! After only a single programming class I really doubted my ability to do well in this role. Now I know that at some point we're all beginners at the tasks we enjoy and that fear of leaving our comfort zone dissolves as you improve.

How has the peer leader experience shaped you as a person outside of school?

Peer leading is rewarding in many ways. It has made me more confident in my ability to work with others and showed me the importance of sharing knowledge.
